BOOK 2 OF RUDRA Trilogy
CHAPTER 1 FROM RUDRA TRILOGY BOOK 2
Standing at the terrace of his palace, he watched his
people. Nonchalant to the eminent danger, they kept on with their daily chores.
Damp withered leaves and broken-off twigs in the lawn being cleared by his
gardener. The horses were gazing lazily on the field. The stillness of the
mountain awakened a strange feeling inside him. A benevolent king, Vasuki had
always loved his people. The depth of the silence evoked the murmuring of the
curse in the air as he open his eyes. Images of the curse had torn apart his
dreams, making him to wake up abruptly. He looked up above at the ash-grey sky
searching for something.
The storm kept on, the clouds still marooned at the peaks.
The curse has now come true!
‘My trust on your tribe has been broken. Betrayal needs to
be punished at all cost’ the voice of the greatest Lord vibrating inside the
hollowness of his heart.
‘Do not do this, my Lord’...Vasuki’s voice shaking as he
kneeled down .But Shiva was calm and purposeful.
It pained Vasuki. Now it was time to leave everything behind.
Soon the city of Bhogavati will be a cursed city-deserted and haunted.
The treachery of Visvasphani had cost the Nagas dearly!
Visvasphani’s life has been forgiven but the whole Naga
tribe had been doomed.
The skies were cloudless, the clean air polishing the light
to a high gleam. A breeze rose intermittently from the valley floor, skimming
over the treetops.
It was time now!
For the endless journey to begin.
They came down along the flanks of Ashtapada mountain. Men,
women and children, carrying their household belongings walked along. The
journey was obscure, the destination vague.
Nagavanshi king Vasuki looked around. The peak of Kailash
could be seen at a distance. His Lord’s abode. Perhaps, this was the last time
he was watching it.
The Nagas were now a cursed tribe banished from their
homeland.
‘Remember everyone...this journey is going to be very
long...soon we need to cross the desert which might drive us crazy...I hold the
power of life and death of every person I take with me.’ Vasuki shouted on top
of his voice. The Nagas listened patiently, some of them afraid of the way
ahead. ‘And remember we have only one God...Lord Shiva...and in his name I
swear that I will do everything possible to win over the horrific roads ahead.
We all should stay together, no matter what. I want each one of you to swear by
the greatest Lord to follow my orders. In this journey, disobedience means
death.’
A long note was sounded on a conch shell, and the Nagas
started mounting the horses. Some families continued on their foot.
The wind never stopped, snow hurling across the faces of
the travellers. The valley was sandy at some stretches, and rocky in others.
When their path was blocked by a boulder, they had to go around it. In some
places, the ground was covered with frozen icy lakes. The immense collection of
people and animals began to travel to faster. The days had become silent, but now,
even the nights-when the Naga people were accustomed to talking around the
fires-had also become quiet. The endless journey asked for sacrifices and many
died on the way due to fatigue. Many dropped tired as the procession of people
and animals went on and on. The unknown road lay there as death itself.
He
knew it was the day he was going to die!
As the guards hauled him mercilessly towards the big-size
rock.
A heavy bracelet of twisted gold slid down to his wrist.
And as Vasuki looked at the coiled-snake design his thoughts grew chaotic and
disoriented.
Betrayal
needs to be punished at all cost... Betrayal needs to be punished at all cost...those
words of the greatest Lord rattled inside his brain. Vasuki looked at the
chained figure of Visvasphani. He looked thinner and frightened. The royal
guards dragged him to the elevated platform while he shrieked for forgiveness.
Looking deep into Visvasphani’s eyes, Vasuki felt that he had already gauzed
his conclusion. The guards looped the rope around his neck and tightened it.
The Naga king bit his lips a few times and closed his eyes. The Lord had spared
Visvasphani’s life but...he needed to be punished.
For dooming the whole Naga tribe.
The sky was streaked with the carnage of sunset. The whole
tribe looked upon. A priest began to pray, humming line after line of prayers.
Vasuki nodded to the hangman. Visvasphani looked up. The sun was still high,
its white core girded by a pink halo. The land glittered. He silently prayed to
the Lord to forgive him. The secret has been lost forever. A flock of wild duck
flew over him and dived into an unknown territory. Visvasphani looked at Vasuki
until the rock suddenly gave away dropping his body into an unfathomable abyss.
The low curtain of heaven stared darkly at the silvery face
of the snow filled valley, over which streaks of shining yellow lightning
cracked, releasing ear splitting explosions of thunder. The first pearl shaped raindrops
made the grass shudder and everyone felt that the hanging had made the Gods
sad.
They kept on...the Nagas, to an unknown place. Fatigued and
exhausted, the whole tribe moved on. Doves cooed from the field. Full-voice
strange and rare birds sang to them from the trees.
No one knew exactly where their destination was.
The Nagas were almost at the edge of the mountain when
Vasuki stopped and lifted his face to the cloud-less sky. He silenced the whole
tribe with a finger. Everyone followed his gaze, but saw nothing at first.
Then, far off in the sky, a bird peeled itself from the sheet of bright
sunlight and descended rapidly.
Vasuki’s eyes caught the colours of terror. Their arch
enemy- the Garudas, also called the Suparnas had a peculiar fashion of attack.
Vasuki remembered how ruthless they are. Each time before their attack, some
hovering eagles could be watched above the sky. The bird came spiralling down
closer and closer to earth till everyone could make out what it was, an eagle,
its plumage a smoky ash-brown.
They are coming! Thought Vasuki.
‘Beware everyone...take up your weapons....take
positions....’ Vasuki shouted and ran his horse towards the opposite side of
the mountain. Karkotaka, his commander positioned the Naga army and started
getting ready for the attack.
A few minutes later, flags with Eagle insignia appeared on
the stretch of the horizon. Two horsemen carrying the flag could be seen
galloping, their swords brandishing in the air. Within seconds, the two
horsemen had become ten, and then a hundred.
A warm wind rustled the green stalks of mammoth grasses
lining their path. Summer was giving way to autumn and the sunlight outside was
brilliant.
They were tribesmen dress in blue and black. The Garudas.
Their faces were hidden behind blue veils, with only their eyes showing. Even
from a distance, their eyes conveyed the strength of their souls.
And their eyes spoke of death.
A violent war was about to begin!
The Garudas and the Nagas, arch enemy from birth.
Vasuki trembled .He closed his eyes and prayed to the
greatest Lord. His shaking hands slowly searched its way inside his jacket,
bringing out a small box.
Silently he opened it. A bluish light dazzled .The
liberator of their endless pain was inside.
The Rudraksha!.
Many years later, their liberator will come. the One who carries the blue blood in his veins.
The prince who had forgotten it all!
The last Naga Prince on earth!
